Choosing a Car Seat:
A car seat is often labelled with Isofix, i-Size, and ECE, which is information about certifications and types.
When you buy a car seat, please ensure that the seat is safety-approved with an ECE label or an i-Size approval. Aside from that, you need to pick a car seat that suits your child's size.
ECE labelled car seats are divided into groups based on the child's weight and size:
Group 0+: Weight 0 13 kg, Height 40 90 cm, Age approx. 0 15 months
Group 0+/1: Weight 0 -18 kg, Height 40 100 cm, Age approx. 0 4 years
Group 1/2/3: Weight 9 36 kg, Height 75 - 150 cm, Age approx. 1 to 12 years
Group 2/3: Weight 15 36 kg, Height 95 150 cm, Age approx. 3.5 12 years
Isofix and the ECE Label
Isofix is a standard for mounting car seats in cars with the Isofix system. Isofix is not a legal requirement but a method of fastening the car seat in cars with Isofix fittings.
Isofix mounting provides high safety when fastening the car seat, and many car seats with Isofix can also be mounted with the car's seat belt.
The ECE label is the safety requirement from the EU for car seats.
The ECE is orange and often placed on the side of the seat cushion or the side of the neck support.
The EU standard numbers are:
ECE R 44/03, ECE R 44/04, or ECE R129 (i-Size)
i-Size
i-Size is a newer safety standard for car seats, functioning parallely with the current ECE labels. i-Size is a further development of the ECE label (ECE 44-03 and 44-04 standards)
i-Size classifies car seats based on the height of the child:
- 10-105 cm (newborn approx. 4 years old)
- 61-105 cm (approx. 6 months approx. 4 years old)
- 100-135 cm (approx. 6 months - approx. 12 years old)
The classifications are also based on the fact that children should be seated against the direction of travel as long as possible. Furthermore, with i-Size, it's easier to see when your child has grown out of their current car seat and need a new one.
i-Size is not a legal requirement but a regulation including the following 5 factors:
- Categorisation by cm (and not by kg):
With the previous system, many children moved to the next car seat to soon, without being ready in terms of height.
- Side collision test:
Aside from the 'regular' safety tests, the i-Size car seats go through a side collision test which wasn't a requirement previously. These tests are completed with crash dummies with advanced sensors that measure the impact of the collision on the child's head.
- Faced against direction of travel for the first 15 months:
In i-Size car seats, children are seated against the direction of travel for the first 15 months. Previously, the standard was 9 months (ECE R44-04). This is due to the fact that back-facing car seats are up to 5 times as safe as the front-turned ones.
- Required Isofix mounting:
iSize car seats use the same Isofix mounting. This means that it's difficult to fasten the seat incorrectly as you mount it in the car's Isofix fastenings. However, the i-Size car seats are slightly broader and often take up more space which means that there may not be enough room in a small car with Isofix fixings (the base with supporting leg may be particularly difficult to fit into mini cars). At the same time, this means that you cannot use an i-Size car seat in a car without Isofix fixings.
- i-Size approved seats in the car: As the i-Size car seats are slightly broader, newer cars will have an i-Size classification to indicate that there's room enough in the car. i-Size car seats may fit into cars without the i-Size label as well, but there's no guarantee.
