Hedgehogs are believed to be one of the oldest mammals on earth. In Denmark, it is one of the most well-known mammals and often lives in small forests or gardens, where it is active at night. The hedgehog's food consists mainly of insects and their larvae as well as worms and snails.
A newborn hedgehog has about 90 soft, white spines. An adult hedgehog has 5,000-7,000 spines. The hedgehog uses its spikes to defend itself against enemies. The hedgehog goes into winter hibernation in the autumn and wakes up again in April or May.
